The cold snap continues.

There has been a considerable amount of water under the bridge since my last post. I has occurred to me that I should figure out exactly how much water is flowing beneath the bridge. I am missing posts for 2 days. That's a lot of water. Given the flow rate and a cross section of the river, it should be possible to get a reasonable estimate of how many tons per day pass beneath the bridge.
This morning the temperature dropped to -40C. The mist above the river floats gently upward making the river look like a large hot tub. Kelly, my cool co-worker stopped to capture images this morning. The ice bridge is beginning to come together in spots but rest assured there will be no leisurely strolls out onto the river ice. There is a noticeable bite in the air this morning and people are talking about the groans a protests from their vehicles as they are subjected to cold starts. My grand fortune is that I am close enough to the workplace that I can simply dress up and enjoy the winter air as I stroll back and forth to work.

December 15, 2008

The weather today has been consistent with the past four days.......overcast and cold. The river ice remains open although the ice bridge upstream is beginning to form. There are tracks out onto the ice that are more than two days old. This image was taken from the south side of the river facing north. I walked across the highway, past the sewage pumping station and down to the bank from the main road into the camping area. A vehicle had parked next to the river prior to my arrival. I went about my business and captured this image and as I returned I was surprised to find that the occupants of the vehicle had found their way to the riverbank in order to shoot pictures. I found it an interesting coincidence that I had made my way down to the river to capture a daily image at the same time someone else arrived to do the same thing likely for a different purpose.

Friday, December 12

Today's temperature: -19 C. Photo time: 11:25 am
This image was taken standing near the Montreal River bridge looking upstream. There is a beautiful fluffy covering of new snow from last night. The frost remains on the trees on the south side of the river for some reason. The traffic on the bridge above is non-stop. The heavy rattle of a semi-tanker is heard periodically along with the constant movement of small vehicles back and forth.

A blog for all seasons

This is a new blog for posting writing and images of the Montreal River as it changes through the seasons. The first thing I need to do is get a camera to shoot the first image. The temperature today is below 30 degrees. The grinding of snow crystals on the way to work this morning was an obvious clue that winter is here. The good thing about this is that the ice will thicken out on the lake and safe travel is a guarantee. We can walk across the lake to town now without worrying about open water in the narrows at the end of the bay.
